Description

A selection of highlights from the Centre for African Art in New York City, which enables newcomers and African art enthusiasts alike to learn about these traditions. The "African Art Portfolio" comes with 24 unbound colour images encompassing a broad range of artistic styles and traditions, from abstract to naturalistic, from the 11th to the 20th century. Examples include ceremonial masks and figures, household objects and royal regalia in a wide range of materials - wood, fibre, beads, brass, bronze, clay, gold and ivory. The pieces included are discussed in an accompanying educational booklet. It should be particularly helpful for parents and teachers interested in multi-cultural art education. The portfolio examines four main themes: African ancestors; art of African cities, states and nations; African masks; and the creative genius of African artists.
