Author Biography

Henk J. Beentje is a Principal Scientific Officer at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. He has been visiting Africa, on and off, since 1975. His publications include: a book on the trees of Kenya; a book on the palms of Madagascar (with John Dransfield); a glossary of botanical terms (with Martin Cheek); and a field guide to the mangrove trees of Africa (with Salamao Bandeira). Since 1998 he has been editor of the Flora of Tropical East Africa, for which series he has edited 57 parts (so far), and for which he has (co-)authored 13 parts, including the large family Compositae. Shahina A Ghazanfar has worked in Pakistan, West Africa and Arabia and has made major contributions to the study of the vegetation and floras, economic importance and conservation of the floras of these countries. She studied at the University of Cambridge, UK, has authored and edited six books, and over 50 research papers and chapters in books.
