Description

This exciting new addition to the Routledge Studies in Health Management series concentrates on the management of the public health function and how it differs from the management of clinical work. This text provides a profound analysis, illustrated with up-to-the-minute case studies of public health management in action. Taking examples from across Europe, the authors provide a unique comparative perspective on this important issue. The key issues the book addresses include: * the concept of managing for health, or public health management * the importance of public health management * the implications of public health management for health policy * describing the skills and frameworks required of managers and practitioners working in health systems * implications for training and development This unique text covers an area that is of vital importance to the field, but is as yet uncharted territory. Combining the very best of theory and practice Managing for Health will be essential reading for all those studying or working in public health management.

Reviews

'In this timely and highly readable book, David Hunter and his colleagues demonstrate the importance of leadership in achieving better health in an increasingly complex world. It will be essential reading for those delivering better health but it also deserves to be read, and hopefully understood, by their political masters.' - "Martin McKee CBE, Professor of European Public Health, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine" 'This is an important book, which argues cogently that health (and not only health services) has to be managed, and that public health practitioners and managers have to be equipped, through good management development programmes to manage for health. It deserves not only to be widely read throughout Europe -- but, more importantly, the conclusions should be implemented.' - "Philip C. Berman, Director, European Health Management Association"
