Description
The Naval and Military Club - or the 'In & Out' as it is affectionately known - is one of Britain's greatest and oldest service clubs and this book tells its rich and entertaining history for the first time. Lavishly illustrated, it captures the essence of British style inside one of London's grandest clubhouses - first with a famous home in Piccadilly and now in St James's Square. Over 150 years, its members have included numerous Victoria Cross winners, triumphant generals and admirals, even bold explorers. There are intimate tales of brave soldiers and sailors - alongside a few rogues and accounts of scandalous behaviour!
Author Biography
Tim Newark is the author of several critically acclaimed military history books, including Highlander, The Fighting Irish, The Mafia at War, and Camouflage, which accompanied the Imperial War Museum exhibition. Reviews"To outsiders, London clubs exude an aura of mystery. Tim Newark's lively and fascinating account of the In & Out club pulls back the curtain and reveals a rich history that will appeal far beyond clubland"-Gary Sheffield, Professor of War Studies, University of Wolverhampton "With his trademark verve, wit and meticulous research, Newark offers an absorbing insight into the history of a London institution-which will fascinate the general reader as well as those with a personal connection to the great and glorious history of our armed forces"-Bel Mooney, Daily Mail columnist "This is not merely a well-written account of a London club with military connections. What Tim Newark cleverly gives us is a strikingly original history of the British Armed Forces over the last 150 years!"-Dr. Peter Caddick-Adams, UK Defence Academy
