Natan Sharansky, currently a senior government minister in Israel, has been an icon in the international struggle for human rights for more than two decades. Arrested by the Soviet government in 1977 both for his dissident activities and his request to emigrate to Israel, his uncompromising struggle against his Soviet captors during the nine years of his imprisonment served as a rallying cry to human rights activists all over the world.
