Description
This book examines the conditions under which non-governmental organisations (NGOs) may exert influence on policies to conserve and sustainably use natural resources in sub-Saharan Africa. The book is unique in bringing together NGO campaigners in three African countries with academics specialising in development studies, systems and environmental policy. The first section of the book provides essential background material on land resource issues in sub-Saharan Africa and a new conceptual framework for study. The second section is devoted to detailed case studies of NGO activity. Topics covered include: * NGO influence on the negotiations for the UN Convention to Combat Desertification * Campaigns against land use policy in Botswana, Zimbabwe and the Niger delta * Water use campaigns in Bulawayo, the Okavango Delta and Nigeria. The book concludes with a summary of the lessons the study yields for NGO campaigners and policy-makers. Offering a wide wealth of empirical research material, this book illuminates the complex nature of governance and policy-making for resource issues at local, national and international levels. It is essential reading for environment and development policy practitioners, and for students of development studies, African politics and international relations.
