Description
Architects, city planners and other design professionals have used theory and research from psychology and other behavioral sciences to make their work more responsive to the needs of the people who use the buildings, parks and city streets they help to shape. This book describes in detail thirteen cases in which that approach was followed. It analyzes the use of environmental design research in each case, demonstrating how it has made a positive contribution in these cases and how its use can improve design and planning processes in general and thus the quality of the built and natural environments.
Reviews"...should provide considerable food for thought to students wanting to know more about the application of their discipline...Cherulnik's decision to use case studies to convince designers and planners of the benefits of applied research...is an excellent one...the book should achieve Cherulnik's goal of adding... to the progress of applied environmental design research." Carolyn Whitehead, Journal of Environmemtal Psychology "As a practitioner, I found it stimulating to be presented with the variety of settings, methods, difficulties and successes which the case studies encompass; I am sure that students will be similarly inspired...Cherulnik's decision to use case studies to convince designers and planners of the benefits of applied research...is an excellent one...should achieve Cherulnik's goal of adding...to the progress of applied environmental design research.
