Description

Beyond an Era: The Cure for Poetry, Hip-Hop, and Spoken Word (Volume Two) is the second of a three-book trilogy in which the author, DeJuan (Sultan), continues to alter the poetic landscape as we know it. Once again setting the bar high with each poem in this anthology, the author continues to take you on a magical journey in which you'll get his unique and eloquently stated perspectives on life. There are plenty of highlights to choose from in this book, whether its DeJuan proudly expressing his love and joy for his beautiful daughter, or the very poem he read to his lovely bride at their wedding, the sheer suspense or comedy of his storytelling stanzas with life lessons throughout, or his hip-hop inspired lyricism, from his protest poetry (informative passages revealing the treacheries of institutional racism), to a conscious voice speaking directly to the Black community. His poems give the reader insight into the hard truths and beauty of the Black experience in America; but more than that, his imagination and words confidently take you beyond that, blazing a trail where anything is possible, yet all along paying homage to his maker (God). With its message of hope, Beyond an Era is a collection of poems that will both entertain and enlighten the reader, taking you through a series of emotions, all along merely scratching the surface of what lies beneath. Enjoy the ride.

Author Biography

Born in 1975, DeJuan Cuffee is married to Marsha Cuffee, and they are both the proud parents of Brooke Cuffee. DeJuan has been writing poetry for several decades, writing poetry is one of his biggest passions only behind his family, and love for music. Throughout DeJuan's academic and professional journey, his passion for poetry followed, whether it was obtaining his B.S. in Business Administration from Old Dominion University, or his MBA in Management from Western International University, or spending four years in the Army, eight years as a government contractor and now currently working for the federal government, his poetry was always right there every step of the way. DeJuan's style of poetry is polished and intellectual, yet abstract; and he possesses an acute sense of rhythmic writing, to go along with an endless imagination, and very reflective voice. He is often described by readers of his work as an excellent storyteller, with ingenious wordplay, and clever concepts. His themes include anything from protest poetry on social issues such as racism, poverty, and politics, to romance, love, sex, music, sports, hip-hop inspired lyricism, Black culture and consciousness, everyday life experiences, crime stories, and inspirational quotes. DeJuan is one of the more proficient and prolific poets of his era, continuing to craft jewels on a regular basis.
