Description

Cats Work Like This is for cat lovers who know that even after ten thousand years of living with cats, no one really has a clue what their cat is thinking. In this insider's guide to the habits of these puzzling animals, the authors offer insights from two generations of watching their cats work. They share the sometimes hilarious and often astonishing observations on cats that have accumulated over ages, and offer some useful insights into how to understand your own cat. Though there are many famous felines, it is the day to day cat which provides the most enduring interest. Though each one's behaviour and mannerisms are unique, we can find enough practices in common to guide you to becoming an expert in how cats work. Chapters include Habits, with an insight into how cats train you to have the right ones; and The Scientific Cat, with observations and empirical learning following the classic scientific method, as cats don't listen well enough to be subjects in any other kind of experimentation. Learn how cats practice their values and explore what your cats know about you. Find out what cats do while you sleep, what a cat's eyes can tell you and what there is to understand about political and 'eco' cats. With a focus on attention, emotion, cute affection, manipulation, cunning and cussedness, Cats Work Like This gives a rare insight into the workings of a cat's elusive mind.

Reviews

If your mum loves cats and she's hard to buy for, this book could be your solution. If anything, it will be a conversation starter as everyone has an opinion on cats. * Manawatu Guardian * "Find out what your cat is really thinking." -- Tom Baddeley * ABC Perth Breakfast * "Informs you on all the cool and quirky things you have ever wanted to know about your cat -- Rob McKnight * 4BC Afternoon * There are heroic cats from history, such as Winston Churchill's support cat, Nelson. And there are pertinent quotations, such as Michel de Montaigne's "When I play with my cat, who knows if I am not more of a pastime to her than she is to me?". -- Paul Little "A fascinating book" -- Jacinta Parsons * ABC Melbourne Afternoons * "Cats Work Like This, by David St John Thomas and Gareth St John Thomas (Exisle) is a must-have, tongue-in-cheek guide to what makes our moggies tick" * The Senior * "This is a short, attractively produced book that would make a perfect gift for any cat lover" * Crafty Green Poet * "The pictures in the book are really quite engaging." "This is a wonderful book." -- David Boles * YouTube * "If want to know anything about cats, this is the book for you. Nice stories, serious stories, funny stories and some beautiful photographs as well" -- Rick Whittle * ABC Wide Bay * Cats Work Like This is a funny romp through the fundamentals of cat behaviour and motivation, offering insight into how they get what they want from us, their human slaves...sorry, owners. This insider's guide comes from a cat's point of view. If you want to know what your cat gets up to when you sleep, and get insight into some cat politics, this is the book for you! * Motorhomes, Caravans and Destinations magazine * "David and Gareth St John Thomas bring together a wealth of knowledge and experience in writing about our four legged feline friends. Capturing the elusiveness of the animals that both draw us and frustrate us, they are able to warm the deepest cockles of the heart with a huge selection of photos of gorgeous cats. There was something new in every chapter for a long term cat owner, something that helped to understand the little critters just a little more than before. It's been a while since a cat book was able to do that, and therefore there is a strong sense of gratitude!" * NZ Booklovers * "David St John Thomas had written only one chapter of this little book before he died. The work of completing it was undertaken by his son Gareth. The result, although slender, is a rich repository of all things catty. There is scientific data, such as the impressive fact a cat on a hunt can cover two kilometres on a normal day. * North and South Magazine *
