Description

This is a 3rd Revised Edition -- the first published in 1992, and the second in 2002, by the Monash Asia Institute. It contains a guide to the grammar of the Javanese language, which is spoken by around 80,000,000 speakers on the island of Java. The book is arranged in a series of topics, graded from simple to more complex, for the benefit of those who wish to explore this important language. Fresh examples have been added, as well as a file titled How do you say it in Javanese? arranged under 120 headwords and taking the viewpoint of speakers of English wanting an equivalent to an English idiom. There is an introduction and a note on the language levels of Javanese, important for social interaction. This book will be of interest to students of Indonesian wanting deeper knowledge of communication on the island of Java, to researchers considering fieldwork in Java (anthropology, sociology etc), to linguists making comparative studies of Indonesian languages, and to people undertaking employment in Java (teachers, aid workers etc).
