Description

'Once you enter the world of Ann Craig it is very, very difficult to leave until the last page has been read...Riveting, enthralling and intriguing, this is a corker of a read, one that is vivid, real and created with skill and a flair for historic fiction. Fabulous!' Blue Wolf Reviews At 7 p.m. on 28 December 1879, a violent storm batters the newly built rail bridge across the River Tay, close to the city of Dundee. Ann Craig is waiting for her husband, the owner of a large local jute mill, to return home. From her window Ann sees a shocking sight as the bridge collapses, and the lights of the train in which he is travelling plough down into the freezing river waters. As Ann manages the grief and expectations of family and friends amid a town mourning its loved ones, doubt is cast on whether Robert was on the train after all. If not, where is he? And who is the mysterious woman who is first to be washed ashore? In 2015, Fiona Craig wakes to find that her partner Pete, an Australian restaurateur, has cleared the couple's bank account before abandoning his car at the local airport and disappearing. When the police discover his car is stolen, Fiona conducts her own investigation into Pete's background, slowly uncovering dark secrets and strange parallels with the events of 1879. Reviews

Praise for The Night He Left: 'I found this book enthralling. It's a cracking story beautifully told.' Lorraine Kelly, broadcaster 'Un-put-downable' Dundee Courier 'Lawrence's parallel plotlines advance in lock-step with each other over alternate chapters, with spooky similarities but also crucial differences, until they're entwined to great effect towards the end.' Sunday Herald Life 'A very enjoyable read... and a fascinating insight into the history of Dundee's famous bridge disaster.' Kirsten McKenzie, author of The Chapel at the End of the World 'A gripping tale.' Daily Record 'The Night He Left is a deft mix of vivid storytelling, intriguing mystery and building momentum, skilfully interwoven with the history of the Tay Bridge disaster.' Scottish Field 'Sue Lawrence swaps cookbooks for suspense and has come up with a winner.' Scots Magazine Amazon reviews: 'A gripping, pacy and thoroughly compelling read. Highly recommended!' 'I read this just before heading off on the train across the Tay Bridge which added to the spooky feeling! Having learned the stark history of the disaster, it was made very human in this novel. The physical and emotional darkness very well portrayed, but the lightness of having a modern twist was a great contrast. I certainly did not see the brilliant ending coming at all! Looking forward to the next novel.....' 'The two stories kept me hooked all the way through. The characters in both were so believable. Would thoroughly recommend this book.' 'I enjoyed this book. A real page turner with lots of twists throughout. Cleverly written and an easy read. Would recommend it.'
