Description

How are new digital fabrication technologies changing the ways in which architects are constructing buildings today? Digital Fabrication offers a range of informed opinions on the subject written by some of the leading authorities in the world. It addresses new digital fabrication technologies, such as 3D printing, computer numerically controlled milling, along with other robotically controlled manufacturing operations, such as laser cutting, bandsaw cutting, stitching, weaving, forming, bending, folding and stacking. The volume is divided into different sections comprising Manifestos, Methodologies, Interviews and Projects, and also includes a helpful Introduction that offers a brief history of digital fabrication. AUTHORS: Philip F. Yuan is a Professor and Ph.D Advisor at Tongji University. He is also the founding partner of Archi-Union and Fab-Union with achievements in the research and discovery progress of digital design and intelligent construction areas in China. He has published 7 books, including Fabricating the Future (Tongji University Press, 2012), Scripting the Future (Tongji University Press, 2012), and From Diagrammatic Thinking to Digital Fabrication (Tongji University Press, 2016). Achim Menges is a registered architect in Frankfurt and Professor at Stuttgart University, where he founded the Institute for Computational Design. In addition, he has been Visiting Professor in Architecture at Harvard University's Graduate School of Design. He graduated with honours from the AA School of Architecture, where he subsequently taught as Studio Master and Unit Master in the AA Graduate School and the AA Diploma School. Neil Leach is a Professor at Tongji University, FIU and EGS. He has also taught at Harvard, AA, Columbia, Cornell, DIA, USC and SCI-Arc. He has published over 30 books, including Rethinking Architecture (Routledge 1997), Designing for a Digital World (Wiley, 2002), Digital Tectonics (Wiley, 2004), Camouflage (MIT Press, 2006), Digital Cities (Wiley, 2009) and 3D Printed Body Architecture (Wiley, 2017). SELLING POINTS: . Digital Fabrication offers an informed overview of the impact of digital technologies on architectural fabrication today, providing a snapshot of the latest developments in the field, drawing upon the leading experts in architectural practice and education from across the world .
