Their designs are marked by modesty in manner and attitude, yet reflecting their own high demands to the built environment. In their buildings and projects, BABL aim to refine wide-ranging references and to lay narrative trails. Darwin's Theatre: BABL at Work documents some twenty-five years of work by the firm and demonstrates their approach and vision through a selection of thirty-four built and unrealised designs. Inspired by Pieter Bruegel the Elder's famous painting of the Tower of Babel, the book is conceived as a chronological spiral stairway to heaven that represents an evolution of eternal reiterating questions considering constructed continuities in space and time.
