The Maori art of ta moko, skin marking, has existed for centuries and, although it likely comes from the Polynesian art of tatau, it is a unique cultural expression of identity distinct to Aotearoa New Zealand. The word 'tatau' quickly became the word 'tattoo', when in was introduced to Europe two hundred and fifty years ago.
