Bringing together Polynesian objects gathered during the early period of contact with European voyagers, missionaries and settlers, this book presents around 270 items with short captions, including sculptures in wood and stone, feather and basketry images, decorated bark cloths, ornaments and valuables of ivory and more.

Dr Steven Hooper is Director of the Sainsbury Research Unit for the Arts of Africa, Oceania and the Americas, University of East Anglia. He specialises in the arts of the Pacific region and North America. His publications include Art & Artefacts of the Pacific, Africa & the Americas; the James Hooper Collection (1976), The Fiji Journals of Baron Anatole von Hugel, 1875-77 (1990), Pacific Material Culture (1995) and the Robert & Lisa Sainsbury Collection (1997, editor and part author).
