Description

Composites are used extensively in engineering applications. A constant concern is the effect of foreign object impacts on composite structures because significant damage can occur and yet be undetectable by visual inspection. Such impacts can range from the most ordinary at low velocity--a tool dropped on a product--to the hypervelocity impact of space debris on a spacecraft. This book explains how damage develops during impact, the effect of impact-induced damage on the mechanical behavior of structures, and methods of damage prediction and detection. Numerous examples are included to illustrate these topics. Written for graduate students, as well as researchers and practicing engineers working with composite materials, this book presents state-of-the-art knowledge on impact dynamics while requiring only basic understanding of the mechanics of composite materials.

Reviews

'This is one of the first books totally devoted to impact on composite structures. Composites have become of increasing importance in structures since the 1940s, and today many structural elements are manufactured from them, particularly in the aerospace industries ... this is an excellent book for any advanced student or researcher.' Bradley Dodd, The Times Higher Education Supplement 'This book offers a good overview of the many aspects of this important topic by a single author and is supported by extensive references. The book essentially achieves the aim of providing a comprehensive review of current knowledge in this field ... the book is a useful addition to the literature and should provide a good source of reference for both research workers and practising engineers. The book gives value for money for the specialist.' Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers 'This book succeeds as a 'state-of-the-art' text ... The book is very nicely presented and reads well. I recommend it to civil, structural, aerospace, naval, architectural and automobile engineers ...'. Structural Engineer
