Description
Holding a special place in the hearts and minds of New Zealanders, the dramatic scenery found in our high country also attracts visitors from around the world. In the sixth title in his compact-format pictorial series, leading photographer Rob Suisted showcases the landscape, wildlife and lifestyle of this visually stunning area. The terrain is challenging and varied, from the central volcanic region of the North Island and, across Cook Strait, from Marlborough down to Southland. High peaks and icy glaciers give way to fertile river valleys and tussock grassland; the landscape supports a diverse array of alpine flora and fauna and is made up of wilderness areas and farmland. Increasingly, vast tracts of the high country are being protected in parks, which inspire visitors, writers, filmmakers and adventure-seekers alike. With well-researched introductions and descriptive captions that reference the natural history and current land use of the area, Alison Dench's text adds context and depth to Rob Suisted's evocative photographs.
