With this book and No Magic Eden, it may be said that Shirley Guiton has done for the Venetian Lagoon what Ronald Blythe did for Akenfield.

Shirley Guiton was born in Rome, and educated in England, South Africa and France. She travelled extensively in Europe, Latin America and Africa. In 1963 she bought a property on the Venetian island of Torcello and her experiences there formed the basis of two influential books about life in the Venetian Lagoon, No Magic Eden and A World by Itself.
