Description
Eskrima, which is also known as Arnis [De Mano] or Kali, is the indigenous martial art of the Philippine Islands. Dynamic and flexible, with a wide range of training methods it can be practised by students of all ages and levels of fitness. Well known and respected as a highly practical weapons-based system, Eskrima is practised worldwide by civilians, law enforcement personnel and special units within the military. Eskrima uses training weapons [rattan sticks and daggers] from the earliest stages, alongside purely unarmed techniques. These training methods have been found particularly effective at increasing co-ordination and reflexes, providing a fast tract to developing the qualities needed for practical self-defence. This fascinating book, which contains over 450 colour photographs and drawings, traces the history and evolution of this art form and highlights Eskrima's essential training principles and concepts. The instructional section illustrates how the Eskrima martial artist is able to succeed in a wide range of combat situations involving fighting with both weapons and open-hands. Techniques, two-person flow drills, self-defence applications, training with specialised equipment and the philosophy of the art are covered in depth. This comprehensive and clearly written book, written by one of Eskrima's leading exponents, is essential reading for the novice who requires an introduction to the art, whilst the detailed analysis of the advanced training methods will be invaluable to even the most experienced practitioners AUTHOR Krishna Godhania has more than twenty-seven years experience of the martial arts, and has spent the past eighteen years studying Eskrima in the Philippines. He has an international reputation for being one of the leading teachers of the Filipino martial arts, conducts seminars in many countries, and is the Eskrima technical editor and columnist for Martial Arts Illustrated magazines. He has had articles published in Fighting Arts International, Combat, Black Belt, Inside Kung fu, Blitz and Fighters magazines, and has been featured in various Filipino martial arts books such as the masters of the Blade and Filipino Fighting Arts. Krishna currently heads the Institute of Filipino Martial Arts, and organisation dedicated to the propagation and promotion of Eskrima-Kali-Arnis ILLUSTRATIONS over 450 colour photos *
