Description

Narrative of the Expedition to Botany Bay is one of Tench's two accounts of early colonial Australian life, the other being The Complete Account of the Settlement at Port Jackson. Before setting sail for Australia, Tench arranged with the London firm Debrett to publish his account of the colony for the eager readership back home. First published in 1789, the text ran to three editions and was promptly translated into French, German, Dutch and Swedish.

Author Biography

Watkin Tench was born in 1758 at Chester in the county of Cheshire, England. He served as a Marine officer in the First Fleet and witnessed the establishment of the first European settlement in Australia in 1788. Tench headed the list of those who wanted to stay in Australia as a soldier for a three-year tour, although he later returned to England. Despite his return, there is no doubt of the importance of Tench???s unique, detailed account of the English experience in colonial Australia.
