Description
The Bloomsbury Companion to Ethics offers the definitive guide to this key area of contemporary philosophy. Covering all the fundamental questions asked by meta-ethics and normative ethical theory, thirteen specially commissioned chapters from an international team of experts explore the central ideas, terms and case studies in the field, and new directions in ethics as a whole. Now available in paperback, the Companion to Ethics covers issues such as moral methodology, moral realism, ethical expressivism, constructivism and the error theory, morality and practical reason, moral psychology, morality and religion, consequentialism, Kantian ethics, virtue ethics, feminist ethics, moral particularism, experimental ethics, and biology, evolution and ethics. Featuring a series of indispensable research tools, including key technical terms, a historical chronology, a detailed list of internet resources for research in ethics, and a thorough list of recommended works for further study, this is the essential resource for anyone studying, researching and writing in contemporary philosophical ethics.
Author Biography
Christian Miller is Associate Professor of Philosophy at Wake Forest University, USA. He is the author of Moral Character: An Empirical Theory (2013) and Character and Moral Psychology (2014). He is also the director of The Character Project, which is funded by a 4.6 million dollar grant for the study of character from the John Templeton Foundation.
ReviewsThis contribution to the Continuum "Companion" series, edited by Miller (Wake Forest Univ.), rivals and in a few ways surpasses similar titles, including those that are part of Blackwell's and Cambridge's Companion series, and Oxford's Handbook and Studies series. One feature that sets this volume apart, and that future competitors will want to emulate, is its section of three chapters called "New Directions in Ethics." The chapter titled "Experimental Ethics," by Thomas Nadelhoffer and Walter Sinnott-Armstrong, sets out in a very approachable way the sorts of questions that experimental ethics is meant to answer, along with information on the methods that are available and useful in answering those questions. William FitzPatrick's chapter titled "Biology, Evolution, and Ethics" seeks to bring readers up to date on the conclusions and methods since E. O. Wilson suggested that morality be taken from philosophers and "biologized." And Pekka Vayrynen writes a chapter on moral particularism. Other contributors include Al Mele, Joshua Gert, and Russ Shafer-Landau. Summing Up: Recommended. Graduate students through faculty/researches. * CHOICE Magazine * This is a very original companion and one that would certainly be of value to most universities' libraries. * Neelke Doorn, Ethical Perspectives * The Continuum Companion to Ethics, edited by Christian Miller, is an excellent volume. The book provides a reasonably comprehensive survey of contemporary analytical work in ethical theory. The authors and editor all supply knowledgeable summaries of their domains of expertise, and almost all the essays are clearly written. * Notre Dame Philosophical Reviews *
