Description
Across Europe and North America, these World War I-era posters exhorted citizens to buy bonds, support the troops, and help the suffering. Eighty color and black-and-white posters, issued from 1914 to 1919, feature the work of Steinlen, Biro, Paul Nash, and other noted artists. In addition, a lengthy and informative Introduction details the historical role of wartime posters.
Author Biography
Art historian Martin Hardie (1875-1952) was a curator of prints and drawings at the Victoria and Albert Museum during the 1920s and '30s. He served in the army during World War I, rising to the rank of captain, and as an air raid warden during World War II. His personal output included nearly 200 prints and 25 sketchbooks. Writer, poet, and printer Arthur K. Sabin (1879-1959) is best known for his development of London's Bethnal Green Museum, now the Museum of Childhood.
