Mo tatou, a, mo ka uri a muri ake nei. For us and our children after us. Tangata Ngai Tahu, remembers and celebrates the rich and diverse lives of the people of Ngai Tahu. Spanning time, geography and kaupapa, some fi fty biographies bring Ngai Tahu history into the present. The people in the book have contributed to their iwi, hapu and whanau in myriad ways: here are rangatira and tohunga , community leaders, people who actively drove the Ngai Tahu Claim forward, activists and scholars, fi shermen and farmers, sportspeople, weavers, musicians, and many more. All are descendants of Waitaha, Ngati Mamoe and Ngai Tahu; united by whakapapa, they are Tangata Ngai Tahu. Produced by the Ngai Tahu Archives Team to coincide with the twentieth anniversary of the Ngai Tahu Deed of Settlement, the book is beautifully and generously illustrated. Hundreds of photographs have been sourced from the Ngai Tahu archive, external institutions and whanau collections. Together these images constitute a tribal family album that is a taonga tuku iho. Te Pae Korako (the Ngai Tahu Archive Advisory Committee) has guided this publication, which is the fi rst in a series of biographical volumes.

The editors, Helen Brown (senior researcher) and Takerei Norton (manager), are part of the Ngai Tahu Archive Team at Te Runanga o Ngai Tahu which produced Tangata Ngai Tahu under the guidance of Te Pae Korako (the Ngai Tahu Archive Advisory Committee). Contributing authors include esteemed historians, whanau members, Ngai Tahu Archive Team staff and history students. They are: Atholl Anderson, Dan Bartlett, Helen Brown, Kirsty Dunn, Harry Evison, Roimata Kirikiri, Nicole McKay, Takerei Norton, Tipene O'Regan, Maiora Puketapu-Dentice, Michael J. Stevens, Angela Skerrett Tainui, Robyn Walsh, Reina Whaitiri, Janet Winter and Emma Wyeth. Te Pae Korako is responsible for the overview and development of the Ngai Tahu Archive. Established in 2012, Te Pae Korako combines traditional authority with scholarly experience. It provides advice to Te Runanga o Ngai Tahu to ensure that the Ngai Tahu Archive is well managed, with systems in place to ensure its integrity, validity and accessibility to Ngai Tahu whanui. The Ngai Tahu Archive Team manages the Ngai Tahu Archive which comprises the collections of the Ngaitahu Maori Trust Board, the records of Te Runanga o Ngai Tahu and personal papers. Through digitisation, the Archive is also becoming a repository for archives of tribal significance repatriated from external institutions. The Ngai Tahu Archive Team is working towards the development of a fully integrated Ngai Tahu search engine connecting internal and external repositories of Ngai Tahu knowledge. The team also provides support to Ngai Tahu Papatipu Runanga and whanau for the care of their own collections.
