Description

In this history of Britain since the war, Roy Hattersley chronicles the main shifts in ideas and attitudes, changes in social structure and industrial performance, and the influence of world events on Britain's economic prospects and international status. Examining how the country has changed in the last half-century, the book is written as a narrative in more or less chronological order. It is the anatomy of a journey that has taken the country from a post-war consensus on welfare to a new belief in individual enterprise.

'This eloquently written work would be my first choice for any student who wanted a compressed political history of the last fifty years in Britain...a classic.' - Brian Walden, LITERARY REVIEW
