Description

Great ANZAC Stories is a collection of writing from authors who were at Gallipoli and wrote fiction or journalism specifically about the events, feelings and characters they experienced during the campaign. There are stories about enlistment and mateship, the landing, the May and August offensives, the evacuation and homecoming. There are poignant stories of men visiting their dead mates' mothers on arrival home, and first-hand, exciting accounts of the major battles, humorous character sketches and plenty of dry Aussie humour. Jim Haynes has approached the whole collection as if each story was newly written and has edited and presented them in a way that makes them vibrant, sensible and accessible to today's readers. There is an excellent introduction with maps and explanatory notes which puts the campaign and topography into perspective for modern readers. Authors include respected writers like Steele Rudd, Oliver Hogue, Royal Bridges and Frederick Loch, as well as ordinary soldiers whofound a creative gift to express their experiences in prose and poetry.
