Mary Elizabeth Williams, an heiress from North Wales, was only twenty when in 1823 she reluctantly married George Lucy and became mistress of Charlecote Old Hall in Warwickshire. Alice, Lady Fairfax-Lucy, who died in 1993 was the daughter of John Buchan. She married Brian Fairfax-Lucy, great-grandson of the author of these memoirs, in the late 1930s and was herself mistress of Charlecote Park.
