An introduction to the art being produced in Taiwan in recent times. This text includes 12 essays which provide the background and context for contemporary Taiwan art in the 1980s and 1990s. The study evaluates political, social and historical factors which inform a diverse range of topics including women artists in Taiwan; Taiwan as a source culture for the Chinese world; art in southern Taiwan; Taiwanese art before and after 1945; cultural identities and contemporary art; and the country's changing relationship with mainland China and the outside world. The text also includes biographies of 30 Taiwan artists with appropriate illustrations.
