Description

Multiple generations of the same family living under one roof is not a new idea. But what is new is the way architects around the world are re-embracing this form of living, back by increasingly popular demand. While the 20th century experience emphasized a single-family home for the nuclear family and bachelor pads, we are now seeing more tiers of the family unit choosing to live together. Come Together (Working Title) explores the why, the what, the where and, perhaps most importantly, the how of the homes that succeed to be livable for all generational tiers - with designs that are not only architecturally stunning, but balancing private and communal spaces to come together.

Author Biography

A design writer, Joann Plockova contributes to the New York Times international homes section, which is where a feature on multigenerational homes fueled her interest in this revived way of living. Her writing has also appeared in Monocle, Azure and the Financial Times House & Home. She contributed to the Monocle Guide to Hotels, Inns and Hideaways as well as the Wallpaper* City Guide to Prague. She writes from Prague, her adopted home, and the US, her original one. She herself lives part-time in a multigenerational home.

Reviews

"Real estate costs, loneliness of the elderly... all over the world, new challenges are redefining the notion of multigenerational housing. The book Come Together: The Architecture of Multigenerational Living shows how the concept of the shared house is being revived." -- ARCHITECTURAL DIGEST
