Description

HONOUR BOOK: CBCA Book of the Year, Early Childhood, 2012 When Tom's neighbour gives him a brown bulb, Tom can't believe it will flower. 'That's not a daffodil!' says Tom. 'Well,' says the old gardener. 'Let's plant it and see.' Elizabeth Honey has created a playful story that little children will enjoy again and again - about an inventive boy, a kindly gardener, a growing friendship and the promise of a bulb. A stage production of That's not a Daffodil! with music, dance and puppetry was performed at Metanoia Mechanics Institute in Melbourne and at the Kyneton Daffodil and Arts Festival in 2016.

Reviews

Short-listed Speech Pathology Australia Book of the Year Award for Young Children 2012 AU Runner-up CBCA Book of the Year, Early Childhood, 2012 2012 AU "While the growing plant provides the structure for this quiet picture book, the comfortable, cross-generational camaraderie adds another dimension to the story. Australian writer and illustrator Honey matches the simply written text with paintings that bring a potentially static story line to life with pleasingly varied compositions and subtly drawn features and gestures that reveal the characters' emotions. A welcome addition to read-aloud collections, this connects with picture books encouraging imagination as well as those on plants and gardens." --Booklist Online "The artwork, done in muted colors, is simple and soft and shows the child's imagination as he watches each stage of the bulb's growth. The relationship between the exuberant boy and his encouraging neighbor is a delight as they care for the plant. . . . A charming story, beautifully illustrated." --School Library Journal starred review
