Description

The jungle animals find that an extremely carnivorous crocodile has claimed their water hole for himself! Not even the elephant wants to tangle with those terrible teeth, until the five flamingos show that by being cunning and brave the crocodile can be made to share his waterhole.

Author Biography

Jonnie Wild's interest in conservation was first stimulated by his own children's distress at learning about destruction of the rainforests. He set up the Yorkshire Rainforest project, which planted new forest trees in an Amazon area as big as Yorkshire, and now has similar projects all over the world. He pioneered many environmental projects in the tropics whilst leading his family business - the famous Betty's Tea Rooms and Yorkshire Tea and he now works with environmental scientists at the University of Leeds, supporting collaborative research and action in conserving forest habitats for the benefit of both animals and humans. Jonnie lives in Harrogate, Yorkshire. Brita Granstroem's illustrations have won such top awards as the Smarties/Nestle Silver Award, and the English Association Picture Book Award (no less than five times) and she has been twice shortlisted for the ALMA (Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award). Her most recent book, with her husband Mick Manning, is Books, Books, Books! Brita's vivid memories of working as a volunteer for a flying doctor in Africa help to give authenticity as well as humour to her illustrations in The Carnivorous Crocodile. Brita Granstroem lives in Berwick-upon-Tweed.

Reviews

"Not only a great and funny read for younger children but introduces the ideas of sharing, community and working together. Recommended for animal lovers, adventurers, eco warriors, tricksters and children who love a funny story supported by bright, bold illustrations." * English 4 - 11 * "This book's sales will contribute to wildlife conservation in Africa, and it's a thoroughly great romp with a fantastic message about sharing too." * Read It, Daddy * "A very funny story with vivid illustrations." * Primary Times * "A great story about sharing, togetherness, being brave and the environment." * DolphinBooks - the blog * "Highly successful collaboration and a great book to share; don't forget to check out the information on some of the animals and conservation on the final page." * Red Reading Hub * "Wonderfully visual and will enchant you from the very first page." * Angels and Urchins * "The waterhole is essential for the jungle animals, so it's a real problem when a carnivorous crocodile takes up residence. None of the animals will risk entering the waterhole, until the five flamingos come up with a cunning plan in this delightful story of working together. There's a wonderful twist at the end of the story, that children will love. This is the first in the Five Flamingos series." * Parents in Touch * "The repetition and alliteration in the text will support the less experienced reader and children reading the pictures will enjoy having greater awareness than the crocodile." * CLPE Book of the Month * "First in a series of original, humorous animal tales featuring African wildlife." * Achuka *
