Description

'The Art of Golf' illustrates around sixty works from across the United Kingdom and shows how the noble game has been depicted in European art from the seventeenth century to the present day in a variety of media: paintings, prints, photographs, cartoons and posters. In his essay Michael Clarke, the exhibition curator, outlines the story behind the development of the game while art historian Kenneth McConkey places the works of the artist John Lavery in the context of the sport. The key image is the greatest golfing painting in the world, Charles Lees, The Golfers, 1847, which portrays in fascinating detail a match. AUTHOR: Michael Clarke is Director of the Scottish National Gallery in Edinburgh. He has published widely, including books on English watercolours, the landscape painter Camille Corot, and his second, revised edition of the 'Oxford Concise Dictionary of Art Terms' was published in 2010.
