Description
Natan Sharansky, currently a senior government minister in Israel, has been an icon in the international struggle for human rights for more than two decades. Arrested by the Soviet government in 1977 both for his dissident activities and his request to emigrate to Israel, his uncompromising struggle against his Soviet captors during the nine years of his imprisonment served as a rallying cry to human rights activists all over the world. Sharanskys release in 1986 was a testament not only to his personal courage and commitment to freedom, but to the principle that one man can make a difference. In this powerful account of his struggle for freedom Sharansky illuminates the weapons with which the powerless can humble the powerful: physical courage, an untiring sense of humor, a bountiful imagination, and the conviction that Nothing they do can humiliate me. I alone can humiliate myself.
