Description
Waitangi Day is New Zealand's national day, celebrated around the country. It marks the first signing of the Treaty of Waitangi or Te Tiriti o Waitangi on 6 February 1840 at Waitangi in the Bay of Islands. The story of Waitangi goes back to the earliest visitors to Aotearoa. How Waitangi Day came to be such a significant date on the New Zealand calendar is equally interesting and full of little-known details. Between 1840 and today, February the 6th has been a day that was sometimes overlooked and ignored, and sometimes a focus for stormy protest, debate and discussion. In Waitangi Day: The New Zealand Story, you will discover: What has happened at Waitangi since 1840 How Waitangi Day is celebrated today Historic places to visit at Waitangi and around the Bay of Islands Richly illustrated with illustrations and photographs from the past to the present, this is a fascinating account of an important place, and a very special day.
