Description

Timber frame building methods are amongst the oldest and most versatile in human history and they are becoming increasingly popular as both governments and individuals throughout the world embrace 'green' issues. Global warming is encouraging the use of sustainable, environmentally friendly materials; and building with wood and adopting timber frame construction, which reduces carbon emissions and the use of fossil fuels, is seen by many as a viable alternative to more traditional building methods. Topics covered: Considers the key types of timber structure, including oak frame, structural insulated panels, log homes, and open and closed panel systems with illustrations of typical examples. Includes detailed construction drawings together with an explanation of the concepts involved. Provides useful tips and advice, and indicates how to avoid problems. Covers planning and building regulations, how to liaise with local authoritives and how to complete and submit the relevant forms and applications. Examines in detail all the important decisions that have to be made, especially with regard to approaching professionals and choosing the right architect and kit supplier. Describes and illustrates the process of preparing, building and completing the construction of a timber frame house. 106 colour photographs
