Description
A successor to J.P. Postgate's Short Guide to the Accentuation of Ancient Greek (1924), this book is a clearly written, step by step guide to the working of the Greek accent system. It now incorporates much additional material and information based on the latest scholarship. It is written for school or university students, who have some knowledge of Greek but who wish to acquaint themselves with accents, either for the first time or by way of revision. It will also be of great interest to more advanced scholars and to linguists because of its clear explanations of the fundamental rules of the accent system. The first part of the book outlines clearly the evidence for our knowledge of Greek accentuation and quotes some ancient sources for the sound of the accent. The remainder of the book is designed to facilitate the learning of the accents themselves. Exercises are included throughout, with answers given at the back of the book. An appendix covers dialect accents, and there is a comprehensive index.
