Description
Only three people in the world have crossed Antarctica alone. The first two were men and both Norwegian. At the age of 34, British woman Felicity Aston became the third and unlike her predecessors, she didn't use kites or parasails to assist her. Facing desperate weather, she woke every morning believing she could not face another day as the expedition became a race against time to reach the coast before the last flight out. This gripping and inspirational account of personal endurance shows what you can achieve when you grit your teeth and decide just to get through today in one piece. AUTHOR: Trained as a physicist and meteorologist, Felicity's first polar experience was a scientist with the British Antarctic Survey, where she spent three years living on the continent monitoring climate and ozone. In 2009, Felicity led the largest and most international women's team ever to make the 900km ski journey to the South Pole. The record breaking expedition involved members from the Commonwealth, many of whom had never even seen snow before. The expedition took 38 days, arriving at the Pole in time to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Commonwealth. Felicity told the story of this adventure in her book Call of the White. Previous notable expeditions include the first British women's crossing of Greenland, a 700km winter crossing of Lake Baikal in Siberia and an adventurous expedition to Iceland for young people with a brain injury. She was also part of the first ever all-female team to complete the Polar Challenge, a 360-mile endurance race to the magnetic north pole.
