Simon S Needham was in the Royal Marines for twenty-two years, has been involved in archery for forty years, and has been shooting competitively since 1989. He has represented Scotland at archery since 1989, culminating in representing his adoptive country in 2010 at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi and Great Britain from 1997-2008. He competed at the Sydney Olympics in 2000, ranking 7th at the World Championships in 2001, with 12th being his best world ranking.
