Description
Published to collide with the General Election, this pamphlet is for anyone alarmed by the present British government of every nation in the British islands. It argues that each one of them can only become a democracy by becoming a republic. It shows how the Westminster Parliament has largely abandoned responsibility for the doings of those legal, security and welfare offices collectively known as the Crown. It is a passionate argument for responsible government, democracy and freedom.
Author Biography
Alasdair Gray is an old, asthmatic Glaswegian who lives by painting, writing and book design. He is currently working on a book about his visual art, A Life in Pictures, copiously illustrated, to be published by Canongate in 2008. Adam Tomkins is Professor of Public Law at the University of Glasgow, and English author of Public Law (2003) and Our Republican Constitution (2005).
Reviews* Their pamphlet is small, emotive and disingenuously partial, but it's also lively and timely and it should at least get discussions started. Independent on Sunday * This book makes the case for republican reform robustly and breathlessly. Observer
