Description
Originally published anonymously, the pamphlet called Common Sense sparked a powerful response. Extolling the philosophy of self-determination, democracy and liberty, Thomas Paine's defence of American secession was a radical and inflammatory statement. Finding supporters on both sides of the Atlantic, Paine's defence of egalitarian principles nonetheless generated its fair share of enemies. Unapologetic, immensely persuasive andclearly written, the words of the world's first international revolutionary continue to offer valuable insights into the world we live in today.

Thomas Paine was born in Norfolk, England in 1737 before immigrating to America in 1774. He was a leader of radical movements in both Britain and America, his pamphlet Common Sense was so influential in the American Revolution that John Adams said 'without the pen of the author of Common Sense, the sword of Washington would have been raised in vain'.
