Author Biography

Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery was born in 1874 in Prince Edward Island. Her mother died when she was just under two years old and so she was left in the care of her maternal grandparents, who brought her up. She published her first novel Anne of Green Gables in 1908 which was an immediate success. And so Montgomery's successful career took off. She went on to write 20 more novels and 530 short stories, many of which were inspired by her rural home. Her published work, as well as her letters and diaries, have been read and loved all over the world. Judith John (glossary) is a writer and editor specializing in literature and history. She has worked as an editor on major educational projects, including English A: Literature for the Pearson International Baccalaureate series. Judith's major research interests include Romantic and Gothic literature, and Renaissance drama.
