Description
Drawing on the wisdom of the ancients, from the Aztecs and the Iliad to the Irish Wake, Nine Rules to Conquer Death provides the answer to those eternal mortal fears and longings. Kevin Toolis distils insights drawn from millennia of human experience into a profound and punchy guide to dying - and living - well. Why life would be terrible if we did not die. Why we should embrace our mortality, and see the life-affirming necessity of sharing the company of the dead. Nine Rules up-ends every fear and presumption we hold about death to help us live a more authentic, fear-free life. Nine Rules is a guidebook like no other.
Author Biography
Kevin Toolis is a writer, BAFTA-winning filmmaker, Emmy nominee and bardic poet. He is the author of the acclaimed memoir My Father's Wake: How the Irish Teach Us to Live, Love and Die, a seminal work on Irish wakes, and Rebel Hearts, a highly praised chronicle of the Troubles in Ireland. Kevin has also written for the New York Times, Guardian, Observer and the Sunday Times.
Reviews'This is the bardic volume that distils that Wisdom and dispenses it to a world that has lost its way with death. It's like a lamp to guide us home.' -- Kathryn Mannix, author of With the End in Mind 'As Kevin Toolis has so beautifully written, "accepting yourself as yourself for yourself is death's most important lesson in life." In his cleverly written guidebook Nine Rules to Conquer Death we mortals are given permission to do death differently - to experience death as part of life and life as part of death. And by doing so, we embrace our impermanence revealing the gifts of being mortal and living a life worth living for...and dying for.' -- Shirley Bergin, COO/CMO of TEDMED 'Nine Rules is a compelling hybrid of lyrical essay and practical self-help book. Read it.' -- Seamus O'Mahony, author of The Way We Die Now 'Mind-blowing and thought-provoking. Want to be a better person AND overcome your fear of death? Follow the nine rules.' -- Rob Bruntink, editor of Pallium
