A galvanized reb was a Confederate soldier converted to the true ways of the Union. But, for David Chantry, it meant outwardly renouncing his family and country in order to free himself from prison, all while secretly working as a Confederate spy. Armed with an assignment from a Washington, D.C., newspaper to photograph the Oglala Sioux, Chantry had involved himself in an underground plot to undermine the Union Army by stirring up the Indians against the North.
