ReviewsClimate Change: Discover How It Impacts Spaceship Earth School Library Journal: This installment of the well-known series encourages students to examine the timely subject of climate change. The volume is full of questions, words to know, primary sources, and fun-filled learning activities. The book's energetic and enthusiastic approach is its strength. There are numerous sidebars, supplemental digital materials, and some solid hands-on projects, including how to make a telescope, a solar cooker, and an apple battery. The text and activities work together to remind students that the future is in their hands and they can be a part of the solution. VERDICT: A welcome addition. Explore Fossils! With 25 Great Projects Booklist Online Exclusive: This latest title in the dependable Explore Your World! series takes on not just fossils but also the related topics of dinosaurs, geology, and ecosystems, as well as the role of scientists in discovering the past. Each chapter presents its information engagingly with plenty of well-inserted vocabulary support, age-appropriate riddles, and a cartoon explorer dinosaur wearing cargo shorts. The topic holds inherent interest to many in the target audience, and they should come away with a sound foundation in scientific fact, usable tips on how to derive evidence, and starting points from which to explore further. Browsers, of course, will have a fine time, but this book is even better suited for STEM programs, including those at camps and in museums. Booklist - This appealing series title explores the most recent Ice Age, beginning with where the ice came from and continuing to the end of the Ice Age. It explains how humans, animals, and plants that lived near the glaciers were affected, and relates the role scientists have played in studying the Ice Age and the fossils and art discovered from the time. Chapter questions help guide the reader's exploration of the topic. The text contains word definitions, keyword prompts, QR codes, age-appropriate jokes, and cute cartoon illustrations of a mammoth and armored glyptodont. The 25 STEM projects throughout the book allow readers to practice their observation and reasoning skills. One project, which involves making a science journal, provides the basis for the other low-cost projects that follow. Particularly fun are the factual errors revealed in the movie Ice Age. Included are a time line, glossary, resources, essential questions, and examples of Ice Age sites around the U.S. Great for browsing, but even better for STEM programming in classroom, library, and after-school settings.
