Description

As a budding photographer and oenophile in the 1940s, Fred Lyon surveyed the wine photography of the day and thought, "I can do better than that!" What followed was a seven-decade adventure that took him to the world's great wine regions-to French chateaux, the verdant slopes of Chile, and the picturesque wineries of Italy, Greece, Portugal, and beyond - always returning to the breathtaking Napa and Sonoma vineyards that lie just over the bridge from his San Francisco home. Lyon's keen eye illuminates moments both grand and intimate that define the world of winemaking: families turning out for the harvest, a horse pulling a sled of freshly picked grapes, a midmorning workers' break to enjoy bread and cheese. Vineyards is a delightful gift for wine lovers, foodies, and armchair travelers.

Reviews

Fred Lyon's seven decades photographing the world's wine regions are expressed in 150 engaging photographs illustrating the multiple dimensions of wine. Captivates again and again. - Wisconsin State Journal "For seven decades, self-made photographer and oenophile Fred Lyon has been chasing grapes across the world. In Vineyards, his finest shots are rolled into one burgundy-bound book, allowing readers to soar page to page with him from French chateaux to the Napa Valley. If a picture's worth a thousand words, then Vineyards is a literary masterpiece. With nary a word in sight, the rich gallery tells a universal story: one of sun-beaten winemakers toiling in the fields and of beautiful green expanses. A shoo-in for cultured coffee tables everywhere, and a delightful gift for wine lovers, landscape artists and armchair travellers alike, we can't recommend Lyon's latest enough." - France Today Vineyards is a stunning collection of photographs by Fred Lyon. The book captures 70 years' worth of Lyon's vineyard travels through France, Chile, Italy, Germany and beyond. Special attention is paid to his Northern California home, the counties of Napa and Sonoma. While each image packs a punch, I found Lyon's capture of Cote-Rotie to be particularly fascinating. - Forbes From the US and Chile to Austria, Portugal, Greece, France and Italy, this sumptuously illustrated book showcases vineyards from around the world, and documents the landscapes and practices of wine-making. - The Bookseller (UK) Lyon is 94 and shows no signs of slowing down. He grew grapes here in Napa for 30 years, so this is a subject close to his heart. Several of these striking, luminous photographs feature Napa vineyards or those close by in our neighboring wine country regions. The cover, and many of the photographs, is in black and white, adding a cinematic, old country feel to the landscapes we see everyday. The book features vineyards from around the world, yet always returns to those close to Lyon's, and our, home. This gorgeous compendium is a must for any Napa coffee table. - Napa Valley Register San Francisco photographer Fred Lyon travels the world in his new book, with vineyards unfurling across the rolling hills of Austria, France, Italy and California - from Napa to Los Olivos. Pair it with a bottle of wine. - San Jose Mercury News This striking volume will please wine fans, foodies, and travelers alike. - Publishers Weekly Vineyards is a gorgeous retrospective of [Fred Lyon's] photography, illustrating the nature, history and humanity found among the vines. - Imbibe
