Description
Seymour Chwast, an icon of the graphic design world, has delighted audiences with his adaptations of The Divine Comedy, The Canterbury Tales, and The Odyssey, but it is in Mark Twain's A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court that he has found his match. Inspired by Twain's comic irreverence for the Knights of the Round Table, Chwast's illustrations showcase his humor at its finest. He brings us a brilliant imagining of the beloved hero, Hank Morgan, as well as the full cast of Camelot characters, from Merlin to Lancelot to the king himself. With a bold and colorful design and no shortage of witty surprises, this is Mark Twain as you've never seen him before.
Author Biography
Seymour Chwast is a graduate of the Cooper Union. He is a founding partner of the celebrated Push Pin Studios, whose distinct style has had a worldwide influence on contemporary visual communications. In 1985 the name was changed to the Pushpin Group; Chwast is the studio's director. Chwast has illustrated more than thirty books for children and created three previous graphic adaptations of classic works: Dante's Divine Comedy, The Canterbury Tales, and The Odyssey. He lives in New York City.
ReviewsAs a piece of design, this book is as charming and clever as nearly everything else Chwast touches. The Flash Gordon trappings suit Homer well. In Chwast's hands, THE ODYSSEY resembles a comic strip etched across the top of a Greek temple. -- Noel Murray A.V. Club on THE ODYSSEY THE ODYSSEY-particularly in Chwast's hands-is more of a rousing adventure tale, making this imaginative interpretation a genuinely fun read. -- Gordon Flagg Booklist on THE ODYSSEY Chwast and Twain are a match made in heaven. Kirkus Reviews Seymour's take on this timeless classic is not only charming and clever, it is so cannily rendered that it makes Dante's complex masterwork easily understood for any reader. Divine. -- Chip Kidd, author of The Cheese Monkeys, on DANTE'S DIVINE COMEDY With all due respect to Dante, this is Chwast's Divine Comedy ... [Chwast] makes the Divine Comedy irresistibly comic and inspirationally transcendent. Kirkus Reviews (starred review) on DANTE'S DIVINE COMEDY Famed artist and graphic designer Chwast has turned his talents to the graphic novel form for the first time, and we can all be happy about it...With his signature mix of humor, artistry, and high-level design, he conveys a breathtaking amount of information in clear black and white line drawings...Chwast does a stunning job of telling Dante's story in his own brilliant style. Publishers Weekly (starred review) on DANTE'S DIVINE COMEDY Diabolically witty, devilishly expressive cartoon drawings...an accessible introduction to The Divine Comedy - a sort of high-end, WHAM-POW Cliff's Notes... fiendishly entertaining.
