Description
Kindness and character triumph over appearances in this age-old tale about the value of inner beauty and the power of love. Beauty and the Beast continues to entertain generations of readers and influence popular culture, inspiring an endless series of storybook interpretations as well as numerous adaptations for stage and screen - most notably, the 1946 version directed by Jean Cocteau and Disney's award-winning 1991 animated feature. Featuring 10 full-colour plates, numerous black-and-white images, a redesigned layout, a lovely new font, and fresh border details, this gorgeous hardcover facsimile of a treasured 1875 edition recaptures the fairy tale's magic with a poetic retelling by a noted Victorian author and artist. ILLUSTRATOR: Although active throughout her long life, painter and illustrator Eleanor Vere Boyle (1825 1916) kept a low profile, as was the custom for aristocratic women of her era. Admirers of her work included Dante Gabriel Rosetti, and Boyle's moody, dramatic style has a decidedly pre-Raphaelite air. In addition to her masterpiece, Beauty and the Beast, she illustrated the poetry of Tennyson and the fairy tales of Hans Christian Andersen.
