Author Biography
Mack (1960, the Netherlands) is a graphic designer and illustrator from The Netherlands. He was educated at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. During his education he made funny and educational cartoons about, among others, penguins and whales. These cartoons were later bought by the 'Diergaarde Blijdorp'-zoo in Rotterdam. By now Mack is a regular illustrator at this animal park and he is the author of several children's books, in which animals often are the lead characters. Mack has a primitive way of drawing. He gets inspired by African art and the paintings of the Australian aboriginals. Both create an immense power by simplifying shapes. Mack wants to combine that powerful simplification with a subtle sense of humour. "In my books I try to teach children something in a funny way," Mack says. "If I draw a penguin, it doesn't matter to me that much how pretty he is or how good of an swimmer he is. What I want to show the most is how baggy he stands on the ice and how funny his walk is. That funny bagginess is what I try to catch in a couple of lines. Only when children can laugh about it, I think to myself: 'Yes, I did it'."
Reviews"Each section has just enough factual information told in conversational language to engage students, but not so much that they are overwhelmed or will need a glossary. A combination of color photographs and whimsical drawings highlight the text in the different sections. Mack includes questions at the end of each page which provide a great opportunity for parents or teachers to start a discussion with readers. Recommended." - School Library Connection Praise for MACK'S WORLD OF WONDER: "A fun and informative book. It's easy to read and is packed full of images. It has information on the different trees and animals you can find in the forest and helps you learn about them in a fun way." -- Donna Maguire, Donna's Book Blog (ALL ABOUT FORESTS) "A wonderful book that is just what I have been asking for in Non-Fiction! Because the topic is real life science students like to see actual photographs! ....The information is interesting and students will be drawn to this book on their own. A teacher could use this book in a reading center when the class is studying habitats or as a read-aloud." - Kiss the Book (Rivers, Seas and Oceans) "Remarkable... gorgeous photographs, funny illustrations, and an informative look at water in our planet's rivers, seas and oceans....Be prepared to learn and be amazed; Rivers, Seas and Oceans is an engaging book in every way." - Kendall Rautzhan, Books to Borrow, Books to Buy nationally syndicated column (Rivers, Seas and Oceans)
