Description
Next week there's a talent show for grandparents at school. Some grandmas are excellent cooks, one grandpa is a painter, others are very good dancers. But Jeremy's grandma doesn't have any special talent. Or does she? A cheerful story about grandparents, talents and basketball. For grandmas, grandpas and their proud grandchildren.
Author Biography
Author Anne Sawan explains: "This story which was inspired by a stroll through the book store with my youngest child where I noticed books about grandparents tended to show them doing things such as playing bridge and knitting, meanwhile I know many active grandparents who are busy writing books and running marathons! I still don't know how to dunk a basketball, but maybe one day I will learn." Anne Sawan lives in Medfield, MA. Sernur Isik is an illustrator specializing in children's books and all things lovely. She loves illustrating and creating new stories about places she has been to. She works in the areas of illustration and art for children's books, mascot design, and illustration for several textile brands. Sernur Isik lives in Istanbul, Turkey.
Reviews"Features comical cartoon drawings on alternating white and pale-colored backgrounds of a white boy and his gray-haired and rotund yet agile grandmother impressing a multiethnic class of Asian, black, and Latino children with grandparents who represent today's educated, active, lively baby-boomer generation. Right on!" - Kirkus Reviews "Grandparents are doing fun, exciting things in this story, which fits nicely with a more active generation of Baby Boomer grandparents, who will get a kick out of this story. Cartoony artwork and fun fonts, plus little details that enrich each spread, make this a good storytime choice and a great classroom choice when grandparents are in attendance. Talk to kids about their own grandparents' special talents, and use the book as an opportunity to talk about how we all have our own special abilities." - Mom Read It "Grandmas and grandkids alike will love the close relationship between Jeremy and his grandma in Anne Sawan's funny and heartfelt story. Her dialogue always rings true, and the open give and take between Jeremy and his grandma is sweet and leads to greater understanding between the two. Sawan's portrayal of today's grandparents as active professionals, talented, and hip is realistic and welcome. As Jeremy thinks about the mishaps his grandma has had, readers may giggle but also see that relationships aren't based on perfection but on shared experiences. Sernur Isik's crisp, detailed illustrations are as vibrant as the grandparents depicted in this uplifting story. What Can Your Grandma Do? Is a fun book for kids to share with grandparents. It would make a great gift and an enjoyable way to jump start a talk about hobbies and family history." - CELEBRATE PICTURE BOOKS "A fun look at grandparents and how they all are unique." - Ryan Franklin, Illinois State Library "Absolutely wonderful children's book! The illustrations are AWESOME! Very beautiful. Not only is it culturally sensitive and promotes multiculturalism, it also makes the reader aware of prejudices they may hold. Great book. Great message. Highly recommended." - Thomas Benedict, Goodreads "A fun picture book for children who have relationships with their grandmothers (not all do). Sweet and whimsical illustration that are inclusive of many ethnicities. A book to remind children that grandmothers are special." - Biblio Filer
