Earth: Inside and Out

This work is an exploration of how our planet works, the latest theories of the origins of life on earth and the possibility of life beyond, with essays by experts, profiles of scientists and researchers, and case studies. Written for the general reader, it answers these basic questions: How has the Earth evolved? Why are there ocean basins, continents and mountains? What causes climate and climate change? Why is Earth habitable?

Dr. Edmond A. Mathez is a curator in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at the American Museum of Natural History. Dr. Mathez curated the museum's major new permanent exhibition, the Gottesman Hall of Planet Earth, which opened in spring 1999, the first hall of the new Rose Center for Earth and Space.
