Description

Providing a survey of Native American art from 1780 to 1920, this portfolio consists of 24 unbound colour illustrations and an explanatory booklet giving an introduction to the subject and information on the individual pieces. Indians from the woodlands and plains created beautiful and art objects for use in a variety of ceremonies and celebrations. They include colourful clothing, bags of porcupine quill and buckskin, woven sashes, jewellery and smoking pipes, and they bear witness to the creative spirit that endured even the face of continual government attempts at forced assimilation.

Author Biography

David W. Penney is Vice President of Museum Programs and Curator of Native American Art at the Detroit Institute of Arts. Founded in 1885, the Detroit of Institute Arts (DIA) has been a beacon of culture for the Detroit area for well over a century. The DIA's collection is among the top six in the United States, comprising a multicultural and multinational survey of human creativity from prehistory through the 21st century. Art of the American Indian Frontier: A Portfolio (The New Press) presents DIA's Chandler-Pohrt collection of nineteenth-century Native American art from the North American Woodlands, Prairie, and Plains.
